The Vodka Sour cocktail is a very basic and straightforward drink, nothing exceptional, yet still enjoys great fame, thanks to the particular preparation and spectacular appearance. The cocktail is white, pale, and milky, but the foam floats above the drink, making it so inviting.

Foams, skimmers, and other amenities are now on the agenda, but it is undeniable that a good, artfully prepared vodka sour is a show. And you don’t even need exotic ingredients, shrubs, or dragon tongue syrups to make it…

But let’s see the ingredients of vodka sour: lime or lemon juice, vodka, and a drop of gum syrup, that is the simple sugar syrup to which gum arabic is added. Since this sour has a reasonably mild and immediate taste, you can safely add bitters, angostura, a tablespoon of Chartreuse liqueur, or even lemon balm syrup or elderflower to give it a little more personality. It’s excellent as a refreshing cocktail, but consider it a blank canvas on which you can work a little bit.

There are some recommendations for making the perfect vodka sour, first of all, the ingredients. Since the egg white must be mixed raw, make sure that the eggs are of the highest quality, so supply yourself with a trusted producer.

The second piece of advice concerns the technique for making the froth, that great pearly foam that is so pleasing. Nothing pyrotechnic, but as with any cocktail with egg white, aquafaba, or cream, remember to shake the cocktail without ice (dry shaking) for a minute to whisk the egg white. Then shake with ice quickly to cool the Vodka Sour.

Third: strain with the strainer. Not only does it remove impurities or unwanted particles, but just like the flour, when you sift it, it helps to increase its volume.

  • 6 cl of vodka
  • 3 cl of lemon or lime juice
  • 1.5 cl of gum syrup
  • 1.5 cl of egg white, replace with acquafaba if you don’t like egg whites and if you want to make a vegan cocktail

How to make the Vodka Sour cocktail

Put all the ingredients in a shaker without ice and shake for 1 minute. Add ice, shake quickly to cool the drink, and pour into a glass, filtering with a chinoise. Decorate with a maraschino cherry or lemon slice or peel.
