Sangria is the Spanish drink par excellence, a refreshing cocktail made with red wine and fruit, to which is added, depending on the cases, vermouth, brandy, sherry, Port wine, but there are also variants with gin and triple sec.

There aren’t any original, encoded Sangria recipe, also because it’s quintessential of experimentation and it lends itself to intensive testing, both as it concerns the spirits and fruits involved in the process.

Photography by Anna Verdina This is the secret to make the perfect sangria: good seasonal fruit and the right combination of spirits and liqueurs to add unique flavors.

Sangria is part of the great family of the Cup and Bowl cocktail, drinks containing wine, spirits, and flavored with spices and fruit, usually prepared in a large bowl (really?) or carafes.

Sangria is an alchemical drink and has three major advantages:

1) It’s extremely refreshing, you can’t stop drinking it once you’ve started, pay attention to those sneaky swimming pools…

2)It allows you to recycle those bottles of dubious origin that your old uncle Festus gave you for Christmas.

3)It’s able to transform a mediocre bottle into a wild party.

How to make the perfect Spanish sangria

First of all, we will take care of the fruits. If there is a trick to make an irresistible sangria is to add citrus fruits, at least one exemplary from oranges, limes, lemons, and cedars there should be.

Wash and peel all fruits and cut them into medium pieces, remember that the beauty of sangria is to eat fruit while you drink it. Stuck 4-5 cloves in the apple wedges. Cut orange, lime, and lemon into slices.

Pour two bottles into a jug or in a large bowl and dive in the fruits to make them macerate for at least 2 hours. If you want to get the best results, leave fruits in infusion for one night.

Remove cinnamon, add Port, Sherry, and a bit of Brandy. If you want a delicious and vivid sparkling drink add some soda if you prefer a more aggressive and alcoholic drink skip soda.

Finally, do not miss to add some ice, a big chunk would be preferable, stir gently, and serve in large glasses with plenty of fruit.
