The White Scugnizzo is the Italian answer to the White Russian cocktail. Although the great classic based on vodka, coffee liqueur, and cream is good and delicious, we wanted to make a different kind of cocktail, so we choose a great product from Campania: Limoncello.

The cocktail is sweet but sharp, always slender and never smug, very aromatic and fresh, perfect for making an aperitif different from the usual. But don’t worry it is not too heavy: indeed the alcohol content is very light, so you can start drinking the White Scugnizzo as the first, after work, an aperitif of the day. You can also indulge in a couple of these drinks before going to dinner.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients of the White Scugnizzo cocktail: the alcoholic base is smooth and simple: made with limoncello, gin, soda and a dash of lime juice to add more aromas.

The layer of cream is flavored with a drop of triple sec to smooth the fat impact and then the lime peel is grated over it.

If you want you can also use bergamot or lemon peel, the choice is yours.

As a final touch, sprinkle with a pinch of juniper, but just a little, take a juniper berry and grate it for a couple of seconds.

Ingredients and doses for making the White Scugnizzo cocktail

  • 2 cl of limoncello
  • 2 cl of gin
  • 1 cl of soda
  • 1 cl of lime juice
  • 2 cl of fresh cream
  • 2-3 tablespoons of triple sec or if you want an Italian product, Aurum
  • ice
  • lime peel
  • 1 juniper berry

How to make the White Scugnizzo cocktail

Squeeze lime and strain the juice. Do not throw it, the peel will serve for the final decoration.

Add the triple sec to the cream and put it in the freezer for 3 minutes.

Stir gently in the shaker gin and limoncello with a few ice cubes.

Pour into a cooled cup and add a splash of soda.

Take the cream out of the freezer and place it in the shaker with 4 ice cubes.

Shake it for 20 seconds, then with the help of a spoon pour it over the cocktail to make the final layer.

Hold the spoon with the back upwards and pour the cream a little at a time, raising the spoon a few millimeters as the layer is formed.

Final step: grate some lime peel over the cocktail and if you want an even more charming touch 1/4 of juniper berry.

If you want to make a vegan White Scugnizzo, use coconut milk instead of cream.
