The Gin Fizz is one of the oldest cocktails in the history of mixed drinks, the founder of the Fizz drinks (sours lengthened with soda), and we can find its recipe in the great book of Jerry Thomas, the cocktails Bible: How to Mix Drinks or The Bon-Vivant’s Companion.
If you want to make a Gin Fizz the process is very simple: shake gin, lemon juice, and sugar, and then add some soda to transform it into a beautiful long drink of great aromatic precision.
At this point, you may have noticed the similarity with the John/Tom Collins cocktail, and in fact, they are very similar, but first of all Tom Collins is stirred not shaken and you can find two drops of Angostura in it.
These seem minimal differences and both drinks are excellent and refreshing as summer or after-dinner cocktails, but Gin Fizz is more direct and simple, while the John/Tom Collins is a little bit more layered and sophisticated.
