The Cape Cod cocktail, or Cape Codder, is a simple blend of vodka and cranberry juice, a drink that few people know, but it is a basic drink that helps to understand how cocktails have evolved.

The power of vodka in the world of blending is incredible. This white and still spirit, with such an elusive flavor, when mixed with the right ingredients becomes a bomb and explodes into a thousand flavors.

Not so much for its flavor itself, but because it amplifies the flavor of fruit juices without distorting them, reinvigorates them by raising them to unexpected peaks of taste, but remains in the background.

Today we will see how to prepare this minimal cocktail, made only with vodka and American cranberry juice, but which has given way to many variations that have become historical cocktails. The Sea Breeze also includes grapefruit juice, the more complex and sweet Sex on the Beach thanks to orange juice and peach liqueur and finally the legendary Cosmopolitan in which triple sec and lemon juice also end up.

And let’s go back to the previous speech: vodka and juice together are phenomenal, so if you want to experiment and find new cocktails, start from this base, study it and make variations.

Cape Cod cocktail ingredients and doses

  • 4 cl of vodka
  • 8 cl of cranberry juice
  • slice of lime or sprig of mint to decorate
  • ice

How to make the Cape Cod cocktail

As with Gin & Tonic, there is no codified recipe, it depends on the time and function of the cocktail. The doses usually start from a dash of vodka to strengthen a juice, up to a ratio of vodka and cranberry juice of 1 to 2 for a drink with heavy alcohol content.

Fill a glass with ice, pour the vodka, top with the cranberry juice and decorate with a sprig of mint or a slice of lime. If you want the lime you can also squeeze it, it suits us well.

If you like vodka-based cocktails, you may also find them interesting: vodka Sour, Espresso Martini, White Russian, Moscow Mule, Cosmopolitan, Vodka Tonic, Kamikaze, Sex on the beach, Screwdriver, Bloody Mary, Caipiroska, Black Russian.
