The Brandy Sour cocktail is another son of the Whiskey Sour, the classic cocktail made with a spirit, lemon juice, sugar syrup, and egg white. But this does not mean that it is a drink to be underestimated. On the contrary, it is a drink with character and texture, thanks to the velvety and decisive taste of the brandy that ranges between ripe fruity suggestions, spices, and oxidized memories of dried fruit.

The ingredients of the Brandy Sour cocktail are not written in the tables of Moses’ mixology. Some put a few drops of angostura in it; others prefer a chocolate bitter or a pinch of nutmeg and cinnamon before shaking the ingredients. We provide you with the classic recipe of this suggestive brandy-based cocktail, which you can make even more precious and sumptuous by using Cognac or Armagnac.

Purists will turn up their noses and tell you that these two jewels of French distillation must be humanized in the glass. You just put them in the shaker without mercy, shake and you will not regret it.

History of the Brandy Sour

It is unknown who invented it, but Brandy Sour is undoubtedly the official cocktail of Cyprus, where it is drunk as an aperitif at all hours, day and night. Only the Ouzini cocktail can stand up to it, but it does not enjoy as much fame.

Ingredients and doses to make the Brandy Sour cocktail

  • 5 cl of brandy or cognac or armagnac
  • 2 cl of lemon juice
  • 1.5 cl of sugar syrup
  • 3 drops of angostura or chocolate bitter
  • 3 tablespoons of egg white or aquafaba

How to make the Brandy Sour cocktail

Squeeze the lime or lemon, but you can also use some fantastic tarocco oranges and filter the juice.

Put all the ingredients in the ice-free shaker and shake for 1 minute to whip the egg white well.

Add some ice, shake to cool the cocktail, and pour into an old-fashioned glass, filtering with a fine sieve. The double strain helps make the white egg foam softer and more velvety. Always do this when making sours with egg white.
