Kraken rum tasting notes and review
The Kraken is a scandalously and pyrotechnically spiced rum and is born along the lines of the ancient drink of the pirates of the Caribbean called bumbo, a raw blend of gut-wringing rum, water, sugar and nutmeg. A slightly more elaborate version of the old grog. The original recipe of this pirate cocktail has changed and has never been codified, it is not that it was served at the queen’s table, but it was used to make coarse rums drinkable, with out-of-control alcohol content.
And this rum Kraken proposes the spicy and adventurous charm of the life of the pirates with a distillate that is flavored with 11 botanicals, including cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, coffee and other buccaneer’s devilry. Obviously, it is an industrial rum that comes from molasses, it has nothing agricultural or artisanal, on the contrary, it is quite the opposite: it is very soft to the limit of the pimp, stylized, modeled by spices, even if overall it has good rhythm and nice sumptuousness.
Let’s say that it is a discreet rum taken as a whole, but that if drunk neat it is quite boring and too concentrated on its own spiciness. This does not mean that it is a poor rum, far from it, only that it is not a meditation distillate. And in fact, you use it to make opulent and enveloping cocktails such as Dark and Stormy, Planter’s punch or even Pina Colada, new taste horizons will open up.
Two words about the packaging and the site: very well studied. They have created a very palatable epic about the mythical sea monster, offering a splendid label that knows how to attract attention. On the site, you will find ideas, recipes and a well-chosen 30’s style. Legend has it that a Kraken attacked a vessel en route to the Caribbean, demanding a sacrifice of countless barrels of rum. And in honor of this gourmand monster with an easy elbow, they decided to dedicate a rum with a retro charm to him.
The bouquet of Kraken rum
Full and stormy nose that opens with a storm of spices, coffee and chocolate, caramel tones and then comes razors of ginger and citrus to refresh. The variety is good and never expires in spicy complacency as an end, even though it is not very natural in development.
What does Kraken rum taste like?
Mouth wide, warm, punctuated by spicy peaks with pepper and coffee chasing each other. The heat is measured, it is not a rude rum, on the contrary, it moves with a soft step. From here to say that it is a great rum it passes: it does its duty and does not hide its exuberant spicy nature, but do not ask too much.
In summary: it is a “cocktail rum”, use it like Don Papa, to make cocktails it is a magic latch that opens a thousand doors, taken alone it has a heavy and redundant aromatic structure. Cut it with ginger beer and it becomes poetry. Compared to rum, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum costs the same amount and we liked it much more, less creamy, caramelized, mushy.
Kraken rum price
28-30 euros, like Gosling.
