The Prairie Oyster cocktail is one of the old remedies to combat the hangover. There are many interpretations of this cocktail. Some make it alcoholic by adding cognac or vodka; others, like the great Harry Craddock, prefer a non-alcoholic recipe.
What exactly is a Prairie Oyster cocktail?
It is a yolk seasoned with pepper, tabasco, vinegar, Worchestershire sauce, and if you want cognac or brandy.
Craddock’s original recipe in the Savoy cocktail book is clear: 2 drops of vinegar, 1 yolk, one teaspoon of Worchestershire sauce, one teaspoon of ketchup, and a pinch of pepper on top.
You do it as you like, but be careful with the raw yolk. It could cause salmonella. So it is always better to pasteurize the yolk by heating it to 65 degrees. Or buy from trusted chickens.
We offer you two recipes, a classic one with cognac and a more sumptuous one with coconut milk, vanilla, and orange blossom.
And remember that there are no recipes that cure hangovers: drink plenty of water and exercise. Sweat, and you will recover.

How to make the Prairie Oyster cocktail
Shell an egg yolk and slide it into a balloon glass.
Add the cognac and all the seasonings, take the glass, and drink in one gulp, without remorse. You will have time to think about food infections…
Don’t put the brandy if you want to make the old Harry drink.
But if you want to make a unique cocktail try this old west tonic.
Put the egg in a well-cooled glass. Add a tablespoon of Crème de menthe, 3 cl of cognac, 3 cl of coconut milk, two dashes of vanilla, and two drops of orange blossom. This remedy will not cure the hangover, but it is a bomb!
