Macallan Amber Highland single malt Scotch whisky: review and tasting notes
The Single Malt Whisky Macallan Amber is a spirit that is carefully selected and aged in barrels used to make sherry.
It is not just a detail but a brilliant gimmick to increase its roundness exponentially.
This process imparts a distinct charm to the Macallan Amber: it’s rich, sumptuous, spicy, and full of vanilla hints. Actually, there is way too much vanilla in this whisky, if we want to find a defect.
Perhaps a purist who loves more shady and surly whiskeys could find the Macallan Amber frivolous, unmanly, and not enough salty, but its vanilla-nut charm is irresistible. Especially for those who like soft, round Scotch.
Macallan Amber’s bouquet
Getting down to the details: the bouquet is wide with plenty of dried fruits such as dates, raisins, and baked apricots and a deliciously spiced rainbow of scents based on vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
On the palate
It’s fruity and caressing, with a medium body and a not-too-strong alcoholic thickness, but remember that Amber just wants to caress your palate, not make war.
The finish is pleasing, with a mix of spices, a faint memory of tobacco, and smoky notes that are almost transparent.
If you like salmon and smoked herring with grated peat on top, you won’t like the Macallan Amber.
However, if you are looking for a whisky with an affordable, luxurious flavor that is not too “rigorous,” then the Macallan Amber is a bottle to consider for your home bar.
Single Malt Whisky “Amber” Macallan Price
40-45 euros, a fair price that reflects the good quality of this bottle.
A small note: The Macallan Amber does not specify the years of aging.
What cocktail should you make with this enjoyable whiskey?
An Old Fashioned seasoned with a drop of cardamom bitter is something fabulous. Let’s then move to a good Chinotto sour, Godfather and of course a warm Irish Coffee.
Suggested food pairings
Smoked ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chocolate cupcakes, cheesecakes, ciambella, Tiramisù and chocolate salami.
