Giandon Il Farneto: a splendid Emilian orange wine for all lovers of artisanal wines
All lovers of good drinking and wine should taste Giandon from the Il Farneto winery, a splendid and glowing orange wine that focuses on carefree elegance, juice and a disruptive aromatic charge, but with a unique trait.
It’s a 100% Malvasia di Candia that undergoes a 15-day maceration to find body and depth, but don’t think it’s a tannic macerated, heavy and ferrous and not even flat or banal, quite the opposite. The natural fragrant exuberance of Malvasia in this case is enhanced by spicy and cereal notes and finds a unique joy in this breadth.
Of all the Emilia Malvasia (in the orange wine version), this is one of the most convincing and shows us that the future of this vine depends on maceration, both in the still and sparkling versions.
It is no longer possible to go back to the bland perfumed Malvasia, but two-dimensional, after having tasted the multicolor of taste.
Maybe the future will prove me wrong, but by now it’s an objective fact: the small wineries that invest in Malvasias that have depth and soul are able to offer exciting wines, never dull and always able to stimulate down to the last drop, despite having an important structure.
Not to mention that these wines present themselves in a completely different way and can be sold at more interesting, but always affordable, prices. We are always in the fateful range of 15 euros, which represents the initial amount to start drinking well, remaining in the field of natural wines.
How Giandon Il Farneto orange is produced
The vineyards are rooted in the hills of Scandiano, on the Farneto plateau, a short distance from the Apennines and are managed in a serious, clean and peasant way, as one would expect from a family-run winery that works in biodynamics, without fanaticism but rather with great concreteness.
Harvest, spontaneous fermentation, 15-day maceration and aging in steel. The wine is neither filtered nor clarified and obviously, no sulfites are added.
Organoleptic characteristics
We have already said everything: the wine is a bomb of personality and succeeds in the difficult attempt to make the magnificence of Malvasia flourish without exaggerating, keeping its innate explosiveness at bay, favoring a credible and functional aromatic development for an engaging but never tiring drink.
The color is deep golden, Balearic grapefruit peel cooked at low temperature. The petal nose is full of spicy hints, mint and balsamic tones, with an irresistible fruity gust. Honey and final touch of wisteria.
On the palate, it is rocky, but agile, sculpted, energetic and full of juicy enthusiasm. The tannins are delicately designed and support almost silently. Greedy sip, elegant trait, commendable cleanliness. You can’t ask for more.

15 euros: difficult to spend your money better.
Food pairings
Grit has some, but be careful not to overdo it. Excellent as a companion to Chicken Cacciatore, Vitello Tonnato, pasta alla carbonara, Pad Thai, excellent with onion soup, splendid with Thai dishes based on ginger and lemongrass, but it is such a good wine that you can also combine it with a simple hot dog that there are no problems whatsoever.
