2019 Fermavento Giovanna Madonia: a cheap and juicy red wine from Romagna
Fermavento Giovanna Madonia 2019 is a classic Romagna Sangiovese: rustic and juicy, full, not particularly structured, but defined by powerful tannins and enveloping, ripe fruit.
It is not a complex or profound wine; on the contrary, it focuses entirely on an immediate and contagious drinkability and a good balance between hard and soft parts. It is not a wine for aging, even if a couple more years in the cellar will do it good.
How it is produced
The grapes come from the Montemaggio hill, in the Forlì-Cesena area. The vines have an average age of 20 years and are tree-trained. Heavy soils, rich in clay and limestone. Vinification in steel, with a 15-day maceration and refinement mostly in steel, with a balance of 30% that ages in used barriques.
Organoleptic characteristics
Dark ruby color. Fleshy nose that tastes of tomato, watermelon, tea, and dried meat. Elegant references of aromatic herbs and cherries in alcohol and cinnamon.
The aromatic framework is light and does not push much on the depth or finesse of the line but focuses on the ripening of the fruit.
Annoying and vulgarly vanilla-driven finish, just dirty.
On the palate, it is round and juicy, although short-lived. Slender, with decisive tannins that taste of rhubarb but do not bite. The system is simple; it is not very rich in extract, and the juiciness is also more than fair.
The aging in barrique has rounded off the fruit, broadened the gustatory horizons by adding a little bit of fattiness, but has not, fortunately, developed an abnormal muscular growth.
Overall, it’s an easy-drinking red wine that will help lubricate grilled and protein-rich dishes, but it doesn’t add much to the Romagna wine landscape. It lacks a bit of personality.
