The Gibson is a cocktail that unfortunately is out of fashion, but it is a pillar in the history of mixed drinks. Brutally speaking the Gibson cocktail is a Dry Martini in which you put a pickled onion. Simple, but simply brilliant: one of the most successful variants of this great cocktail.
The story of the Gibson drink, as for many cocktails, it’s unclear, many thought that the name comes from the satirical cartoonist Charles Dana Gibson, famous for his “Gibson Girls”. But that’s all…
The first written source that mentions it is the 1904 menu of the Piedmont Hotel, in Atlanta, but in all honesty, nobody knows who is the inventor of the cocktail.
A cocktail that, while being easy to prepare, has an intense flavor, rich in contrasts, thanks to the sour taste of the onion that winds between the spicy notes of dry vermouth. The gin is the beating heart of the drink, hot and aromatic with its imperishable charm that smells of wood, moss, and juniper.
Pay attention to the high alcohol content of the Gibson, excellent as an aperitif because of its dry and nifty flavor, but two glasses are enough!
