Pinot Bianco Wine Guide
Pinot Bianco is one of the many sons (mutations) of Pinot Noir, which has slowly conquered the world over the centuries, taking root in every corner of the planet. But Pinot Bianco, often underestimated, is actually a vine still to be discovered and that can give fragrant, acidic and very elegant wines. They may not have the mysterious charm and depth of Pinot Grigio, but it makes up for it flawlessly with pleasantness and great drinkability.
Pinot Bianco is a fresh wine, with a not too exaggerated structure, with a unique aromatic set, it is one of the wines that offers a range of unique floral aromas. There you will find roses, peonies, wisteria, jasmine, broom, white pepper, then citrus fruits, ginger, pear, white melon and yellow apple, mineral traces and a clear closure of almonds and honey. But think of a symphony played with grace, the aromas are light, easy, delicate and intertwined with notes of aromatic herbs. And this is the classic Pinot Blanc that ages in used steel and wood, a light-hearted but always fascinating wine, which focuses on immediacy and freshness. But then you may encounter more structured bottles, refined in new barriques and then we have a completely different register, the wine becomes more sumptuous and buttery, develops evolved notes and also the structure increases.
These are two plausible interpretations, in reality, Pinot Blanc manages to withstand even more marked and vanilla refinements, with the right (sur) maturation it becomes more muscular and alcoholic, but honestly, it is a stretch and there is the risk of doping the wine with an excess of interventionism technical and to impose stylistic reins on a wine that is instead a triumph of personality and vivacity.
Pinot Bianco production areas
Its most suitable area is obviously Alsace where it finds great favor and is, thanks to an abundance of aromas and freshness, also at the base of a splendid wine, Crémant d’Alsace, the refermented bottle known for its cheeky perlage.
Other areas of choice for the Weissburgunder are the Moselle in Germany and Styria in Austria. We find it cultivated with great success in Trentino Alto Adige, where altitude and rocky soils help fix acidity aromas, giving it an exceptional minerality. Friuli Venezia Giulia is not to be underestimated, where it finds fertile soil and a certain finesse.
But it does not end there, in Lombardy, it is expected as a vine in the production of Franciacorta and if you love sweet wines, you will be interested to know that many Icewines in Canada are based on Pinot Blanc.
