Villa Bucci Verdicchio Riserva 2017: a glorious white wine
The 2017 Villa Bucci Riserva is a mature and complex Verdicchio that is both smooth and rocky and focuses on depth and contrast.
It’s not only a glu-glu wine. Instead, it’s a colossus that’s getting better and better over time, moving towards a splendid mineral and decadent service sector where the nutty tones of dried fruit stand out and give the wine a sad feel.
This does not imply that it is a challenging, grumpy wine that only sommeliers wearing tastevins, top hats, bowler hats, and monocles should use.
Thanks to its imaginative aromatic charge, it is large and spectacularly fascinating. It’s just good; that’s all this wine needs. Sure, it’s just beginning to transform from vinous and ethereal to tertiary, but it’s a natural transition, and it bobs along gracefully.
The layers of flavor come and go; it goes from tropical to rocky; it tastes like land and sea, like honey, rosemary, and ginger; but it’s all held together by finesse and believability.
It charms and seduces you, and even though it has a lot of structure and a lot of alcohol, it never slows down and is never shy. All you need to do is serve it at the right temperature—no less than 16 degrees—and let it breathe for a couple of hours.
How it is produced
The grapes are selected from old Verdicchio vineyards, between 40 and 50 years old. Organic vineyard management involves pressing and fermentation in steel, then aging for 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 50 and 70 hectoliters. further refinement for 1 year in the bottle, and then it is marketed.
Organoleptic characteristics
Straw yellow. The bouquet is disruptive, penetrating, and severe: it opens marine and punctuates a crazy but not explosive aromatic picture with a bevy of a thousand aromatic herbs.
Hot fruit with almond tart and lemon dipped in marzipan broth cooked at a low temperature with Lebanese cedar wood cut with a chainsaw during group Samhain
Wood is still cumbersome, but over time it will be tamed and integrated into the evolution of wine. Honey, beeswax, and the oxidative scents of hazelnuts on an autumn afternoon.
Even if it allows itself to round out to the mature and pleased arabesque, it is strong, savory, and with a vigorous rhythm on the palate. The green part is quite developed and adds a pleasant note of severity.
Price
43-44 euros: an acceptable price for a white wine that has made history and that has now found a figure and a stylistic groove that are not very original but always amazing.
