Rum Nation Panama 10-year is a soft and caramel distillate that is fragrant, docile, full of spices, and has an annoying and false sweetness.
It’s not a bad rum. From a technical point of view, they started with a distillate that wasn’t anything special and turned it into an interesting but boring bottle with a lot of style.
But this is the magic of rum—giving shape, shaping, and making what burns the guts soft. It’s not a rejection, mind you.
This rum is enjoyable and represents a simple and satisfying drink, but it has no character and not even a minimum of territoriality: it was made for pleasure, and that’s it.
If you don’t want to go too deep, it’s a rum to consider, especially thanks to a very approachable price, but don’t expect it to rewrite the history of sugar cane distillates.
How it is produced
Molasses is distilled, and the rum is aged in oak barrels in the Caribbean for a few years in the style of French rhum. This makes the distillate more concentrated, thanks to a strong evaporation.In Europe, the rum goes through a second refinement that is less harsh and more gradual. This is done to round out the rum’s more nutty, chocolatey, and warm qualities and let them mature.
Organoleptic characteristics
The smell is woody and spicy, with ripe fruit in syrup, orange marmalade, and dates taking the lead.It has rhythm, precision, and richness. Sugar cane and sugared almonds tonally push sweetness and opulence, but overall they do a good job. Final herbaceous trace.
On the palate, it is warm and peppery, with a good alcoholic boost. Ample structure, slightly cropped length of sip, and very simple and direct development Flavors of wood and cocoa in the slightly balsamic finish. Without praise or infamy.
