Champagne Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2006 review and tasting notes

The 2006 Champagne Pol Roger Winston Churchill is one of the most impressive wines we have ever tasted: the intensity, the pulp, the elegance and the charisma of the mild ones are overwhelming.

Let’s say immediately that it is a rare and precious Champagne, nectar to be loved down to the last drop, a 2006 vintage, coming from the best crus of Épernay and that therefore the price is also essential, but not as much as one might think: 180-190 EUR.

Why is this Champagne Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2006 so exciting?

It manages to be majestic and profound without losing a drop of drinkability. The minerality is sidereal, the pulp bites, but the wine is sinuous, with the right creaminess and that aromatic depth given by the tireless work of yeasts.

A few words about the Pol Roger winery. One of the most popular and ancient Maison, founded in 1849 to produce great Champagnes that could age and aspire to a long evolution. The typical rockiness of Épernay wines is just the beginning, the first step towards immortality, or at least they have been trying for hundreds of years. And they go very close to perfection. The aesthetic research that guides the style of the Por Roger winery is unmistakable: the wines are ripe, candied, creamy and sumptuous, but always structured on an excellent mineral structure, salt to bite into.

And so we come to this Champagne Winston Churchill 2006, dedicated to the great English politician, so in love with these wines that he went so far as to say that ’Avenue de Champagne 44 in Épernay, the headquarters of the winery is the most delicious and drinkable address in the world.

Everything in this wine is made to enhance the territory and elegance, the grandeur of the aromas, the finesse of the perlage, the silky minerality of the sip, the base wines are specially designed to be powerful yet nuanced. Let’s face it. Pol Roger Maison aims high. They want to produce outstanding wines, not just Champagne, and its style is unmistakable. A crazy symphony where the nervous and dark charm of Pinot Noir meets the creaminess and candied notes of Chardonnay.

And despite all this, the careful selection of cuvées, the wine has an absurd naturalness of drinking. This is its main merit: it is a colossal wine, but it is not a slave to an aesthetic vision that does not renounce its typicality.

The bouquet

The nose that opens with a torrent of citrus and candied orange peel, vanilla, brioche, the endless yellow pulp that mixes with rocks, chalk, the mineral aromas are almost palpable. The call of the sea in the background and then more evolved notes of berries in alcohol and mint, sugared almonds and hazelnuts and walnuts. The rhythm is fabulous, unstoppable, but declined with rare elegance and impeccable cleanliness. Infinite persistence.

The taste

The mouth is broad, very structured, but with the acidity that is already softening and takes on a less lemony flavor with touches of honey that soften the taste. The acidity is still functional, it dictates the rhythm, but it is silky. The minerality is still alive and pungent. The yeasts have tied everything together with grace.

It is a Champagne of epic proportions, sunny, but with hints of tertiary evolution already well defined, merged into a barely decadent melody.

More than a wine, it is a work of art.

180-190 euros, not cheap, but it is a very thick bottle, made with love and the daughter of an exceptional vintage, not to mention that it has 12 years on its shoulders.

Champagne Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2006 Food Pairings

This structure does not fear combinations, apart from red meats. Dare with roast pork, Chinese, Indian, Mexican food, paccheri stuffed with swordfish, chicken Cacciatore, Vitello Tonnato, truffle risotto, pasta alla carbonara.
