Bulleit Rye tasting notes and review of a smooth and spicy American whiskey
The Bulleit Rye Whiskey is the quintessence of American whiskey: sitting and pouring yourself a glass of Bulleit is an experience that goes beyond pleasure, it is a dive into a world far and remote.
We tell you right away: it is a sumptuous distillate, very soft on the palate, but full, cheeky and proud of its aromatic arrogance. It is produced with rye and then ages for 6 years in white oak barrels: classic method.
The result is a fascinating, warm, spicy distillate with a crazy drinkability and a delicate smoky touch. The fruit is ripe and dense, redundant, with complex nuances that play in a cocoa and mint background.
If you are used to the salt of Islay whiskey or the herbaceous charm of Speyside Single Malt, the Bulleit Rye will seem too exuberant, almost redundant, but we are talking about an American Rye, where richness and spiciness play a fundamental role.
The bouquet of the Bulleit Rye Whiskey
Very fragrant, it opens with notes of cherries in alcohol, dates, toffee that is intertwined with smoked apples. Mint, cocoa, tobacco and obviously a lot of vanilla. While being very expressive, it maintains precision and a recognizable style. Let’s say it does not have an infinite number of nuances, but what it offers is well defined.
What does Bulleit rye taste like?
In the mouth it is round, but never languid, in fact, it is very structured and spicy. It’s an explosion of flavors, mottled by sweet smoky suggestions and a walnut wood flavor that make it elegant and smooth. Long and mellifluous finish, with plenty of sweet spices, mint, and tobacco, which fades into a memory of almonds.
The final judgment? We liked it very much, it won’t be rigorous, but all this exuberance is very appreciable and well-sculpted by a refinement that makes it pleasantly tame.
The price of the Bulleit Rye Whiskey
35-40 euros: acceptable price.
