I often experiment with hamburgers and sandwiches, but making the final sandwich is not easy.

There will always be someone who doesn’t eat meat, who doesn’t want pickles, who can’t stand mustard. So today I want to offer you a stunning sweet and salty pairing: we are going to make a delicious grilled cheese sandwich with figs and ham.

The ingredients for the perfect sandwich are three: prosciutto di Parma (Parma ham), fig jam (or fresh figs if we are in the summer) and mozzarella cheese. If you want to add some arugula, it’s not bad at all.

The ham is sweet and tasty and is caressed by the sweetness of the figs and the mozzarella that melts acts as a binder, making this sandwich fabulous.

Ingredients for making the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich with ham, figs, and mozzarella

  • 2 big slice of bread
  • 3 slices of ham or speck
  • 1 mozzarella
  • 4 figs or 2-3 spoons of fig jam
  • some arugula
  • salt, pepper, and extra virgin olive oil

How to prepare the grilled cheese sandwich with figs and ham

The recipe is very simple. Take 2 big slices of bread or cut in half a baguette and toast them. Spread the fig jam, put the ham over it, then add the finely sliced mozzarella, some arugula seasoned with salt, oil, and pepper and then repeat the layers and then cover with the second slice of bread. The ham should remain in contact with the figs to create an incredible salty and sweet layer of flavors.

Grill the sandwich for 3 minutes on each side, cut in half and then enjoy a small culinary masterpiece.

Tips for making the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich

For a gourmet sandwich, replace the mozzarella with flakes of pit cheese.

What wine goes well with the grilled sandwich with figs and hams?
We look for sweetness and fruit even in the glass: a Moscato, Malvasia or super-sharp Chenin Blanc are all perfect wines. The Spanish sangria is perfect too.

If you prefer a drier drink the Spritz cocktail is the one for you!
