The Chuflay is a classic Bolivian drink. It is a compact cocktail, deliciously mottled, very spartan, but certainly not banal. Its rise obviously coincides with that of Singani, a distillate which, like Pisco and Grappa, is experiencing a real renaissance. From a drink dispersed in the Andres to a popular distillate, the step is short.

known for its refreshing taste and simplicity. It’s a popular drink in Bolivia and has gained recognition in other parts of the world due to the increasing popularity of Singani.

Ingredients:

  1. Singani (typically 2 oz or 60 ml, but can be adjusted to preference)
  2. Ginger ale or Sprite/7-Up
  3. Ice cubes
  4. 1,5 cl of lime juice, optional, but necessary
  5. Lime or lemon slice for garnish (optional)

Method of Preparation:

  1. Fill a glass with ice cubes.
  2. Pour the Singani over the ice.
  3. Add a squeeze of lime juice.
  4. Top off with ginger ale or Sprite/7-Up.
  5. Stir gently to mix.
  6. Garnish with a slice of lime or lemon.

Taste Profile

The Chuflay is known for its balance between the aromatic and slightly fruity notes of the Singani and the sweet, bubbly characteristics of the ginger ale or soda. The citrus garnish adds a touch of acidity, which enhances the drink’s refreshing qualities.

History and Popularity

While the exact origins of the Chuflay cocktail are somewhat nebulous, it is deeply rooted in Bolivian drinking culture.

Variations

Though the traditional Chuflay uses ginger ale, many bartenders and enthusiasts experiment with different mixers like tonic water or different citrus garnishes to add a twist to the traditional recipe.
