Directions
The Bobby Burns cocktail is one of the great drinks of the 1900s, one that leaves its mark thanks to its dry and sumptuous taste, where Scotch whiskey and sweet vermouth play at making love, with Dom Bènédectine acting as a cupid. It is a variant of Rob Roy, in turn, the son of Manhattan, one of the most prolific cocktails in history, in fact, few cocktails have had so many emulators and twists.
But what is special about the Bobby Burns cocktail and why should you try it? Because it is a visionary cocktail for its aromatic depth and if you use a peaty Scotch it becomes a real masterpiece.
The balance of this cocktail is difficult, it must be carefully dosed and shaken as little as possible to avoid traumatizing the vermouth. Half Scotch whiskey and half sweet vermouth with 3 drops of Benedectine to give elegance. The recipe is bold, not for everyone, also because the final result is a haughty drink, with a full and arrogant flavor, certainly not delicate.
The alcohol content of the Bobby Burns cocktail is high, but the drinkability is excellent. The whiskey is tamed by vermouth, nonetheless, the sensation of heat is powerful on the palate. Despite being alcoholically demanding, it is a great aperitif drink.
The recipe we propose is from the legendary Harry Craddock, who in his Savoy Cocktail Book proclaims: “One of the very best Whiskey Cocktails. A very fast mover on Saint Andrew’s Day.” There are many variations, even with the Drambuie instead of the Dom Benedectine, but in our opinion the crystalline purity of these half and half doses, plus those three drops of the Benedectine are unmatched.

How to make the Bobby Burns cocktail
Pour the Scotch, vermouth and Dom into a shaker with ice and shake and pour into a small bowl. Squeeze over a lemon peel. Many will turn up their noses for the violent treatment of the shaker with such delicate ingredients, but just do it quickly, without putting all the strength that Odin has given you and you will see that you will make a masterpiece.
However, no one forbids you to try to do this by mixing the ingredients in the mixing glass.
