Lillet Blanc: Timeless French Aperitif, Reinvented for Bold Cocktails and Unforgettable Evenings
Lillet Blanc is a French aperitif produced in Podensac, in the Bordeaux region, since 1872. It is a modern version of the original Kina Lillet, which was reformulated in the 1980s to reduce the bitterness of quinine and adapt to contemporary tastes. Made from 85% Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc wines and 15% brandy, in which spices and orange peel from Morocco, Haiti, and Spain have been macerated, this vermouth is aged for one year in oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
People appreciate Lillet Blanc for its understated elegance and its floral and measured profile. On the nose, it features aromas of honey, orange peel, lemon, and a hint of white flowers. On the palate, it has a light sweetness, with notes of tropical fruit such as pineapple and peach, balanced by a subtle bitter note that recalls the past of the legendary Kina Lillet, but in a much more delicate version. The finish is dry and spicy, with hints of cinnamon and an herbaceous nuance.
Food pairings and cocktails
We’re talking about a vermouth that would be an understatement to describe as versatile. You can enjoy it on its own, with ice, a slice of orange, and thyme, or pair it perfectly with shellfish, oysters, or fish carpaccio dishes. If you want to use it to make cocktails, Lillet Blanc is a key ingredient in the famous Vesper Martini, the James Bond cocktail, and is often used in light mixes such as the Lillet Spritz, with tonic water and a slice of orange. Or use it in great classics that include dry vermouth.
History and Production
The history of Lillet Blanc begins in 1872, when the Lillet brothers created their first aromatized wine based on quinine and citrus fruits. Today, a traditional process involves macerating orange peels and herbs in brandy, blending with wine, and aging in oak barrels to produce Lillet Blanc. The 1986 reformulation made Lillet sweeter and less bitter (charismatic) than the original version, making it ideal for a wider audience but at the same time standardized.
Price
Lillet Blanc is an affordable aperitif, with bottles generally found between 17.40 and 19 euros.
