Jack Daniel’s honey review and tasting notes
Jack Daniel’s honey is a very soft, pimp, spicy, sweet honey whiskey, with caramel tones that overlap to offer a score where only velvety notes play.
We wrote honey whiskey, but for the American light it can no longer be called Tennessee whiskey, since the alcohol content drops to 35 degrees and no adulterations, cuts with liqueurs or other ingredients are allowed. If we want to find a similar product, we can say that it is the US equivalent of Drambuie, the legendary liqueur made with Scotch whiskey, heather honey and spices.
How is Jack Daniel’s honey made?
A good dose of honey liqueur and nothing else is added to a base of classic Jack Daniel’s Old No7. There are no spices or other botanicals in the ingredients, it keeps pretty clean. The result is pleasant, the heat is always clear and punctuated by hammering of pepper and chilli, so it’s not like it has lost its alcoholic vigor.
Organoleptic characteristics of Jack Daniel’s honey
Very creamy nose, spiced with cinnamon and hot fruit in syrup that attack you immediately. The floral and citrus notes are felt, they are not drowned in honey, on the contrary they create a convincing aromatic link. The development isn’t over the top, butterscotch, meringue and vanilla dominate, but overall it’s tasty, without ever going too deep.
On the palate it is warm, enveloping, with an alcoholic bite that articulates well between freshness and more caramelized and overripe fruit tones. The structure is credible, it has gustatory dynamism, but the volume is not very developed. A lot of wood, a lot of sweetness stylized by honey and then the usual classic woody smoke from Jack Daniel’s Old No7.
What cocktails to make with Jack Daniel’s honey
To drink so straight it is an unpretentious drink, very smooth, but it certainly gives its best as a mixing liqueur, especially if you combine it with acidic juices such as those of lime, orange, lemon and bergamot. With pineapple and cinnamon it is good, but also try with mango nectar and allspice dram. To make a different whiskey sour than usual is not bad.
Price of Jack Daniel’s honey
The 1-liter bottle costs € 25-26: a fair price to pay for a velvety liqueur, not very inspired, but pleasant overall.
