Grappa Anfora Marzadro aged in terracotta: the review of a velvety and delicious distillate
The Marzadro Anfora Grappa aged in terracotta was a pleasant surprise. It was a very soft and fruity distillate, very delicate, with floral and red fruit notes that wowed both the nose and, more importantly, the mouth.
Its refinement in amphora comes from the trend that is sweeping the wine world. But we know that terracotta is an incredible material.
It is not burdened by with the wood, the vanilla, the tannins, and the spices that come from the oak.
So, refining a wine or distillate in an amphora doesn’t change its qualities and also helps it get more oxygen, which makes it very smooth.
So if you love barricaded grappas, you won’t like this one. There are no tannins in the wood, just the flavors of walnut, tobacco, and cinnamon. No, this grappa is very simple, direct, and clean.
We can say that it has a crystalline charm.
Organoleptic characteristics
The bouquet is spectacular in its finesse and intensity: peach, currant, rosemary, and rocks surrounded by a cascade of flowers. The tone is graceful and lighthearted, not very deep, but the variation is excellent.
Menthol and smoky notes give freshness and variety; the finish is almost spicy.
Moscato adds its very fragrant charge, but it is contained. I work in the background, and the scents of the woods prevail.
Great surprises arrive on the palate. It is not the usual smooth grappa; on the contrary, it has a discreet complexity and not an obvious aromatic depth.
It moves with a certain elegance; it does not disdain a good volume, even if the sip is always velvety.
How it is produced
The blend of pomace used for distillation speaks a typically Trentino language, and in fact, the vines are divided into 80% Teroldego, Marzemino, and Merlot, with the remaining 20% being Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, and Moscato. Double distillation and 10 months aging in terracotta amphorae
Price
25–27 euros is a great price for a perfectly made grappa that is original and smooth, has finesse, and has an admirable level of basic cleanliness.
