Glenmorangie The Duthac review, tasting notes and price
Glenmorangie The Duthac is an unusually dry and herbaceous whisky for this distillery, it has a certain elegance, great price and is sold in the 1-liter bottle
The Duthac is a Scotch single malt whisky atypical for this distillery, the usual very rich, sumptuous, but fruity and very soft style has this time been interpreted in a more dry and severe way.
Mind you it is always a son of the Glenmorangie, therefore the oxidized and honeyed notes are there, however, a lashing tannic roughness is perceived. More than roughness we could say prowess. Overall it is still a velvety dram, only the classic decadent suggestions are refreshed by a firm and vigorous push that makes the whisky straighter and less plump.
How is Glenmorangie the Duthac whisky made
After the classic double distillation, two refinements take place, the first in virgin oak barrels and the second in barrels used for the production of Pedro Ximénez sherry. Aging is not specified, while the alcohol content is 43 degrees, just above the minimum wage of 40.
Organoleptic characteristics of Glenmorangie the Duthac
The bouquet clings your nose, takes you with those irresistible sweet, herbaceous and caramelized notes that only Glenmorangie manages to blend so perfectly with ethereal tones. It is almost a mixture of fake scents of glue and marshmallows dissolved in burnt honey and spread over a cream tart. In any case, the fruit is in syrup, warm, full of baked fruit, with caramel garnish and oxidized nutty tones, almost like cooked must. Sweet spices outline a solid but unobtrusive frame. Fresher citrus tones and then herbs and more medicinal references from an apothecary, dried flowers and a final of coffee and butter. Overall it is very rich but well designed, stylized, but tasty.
On the palate, it is rich, has good structure and is modulated by a peppery heat, but without exaggerating, a softness always intervenes that appeases the flames, despite the 43 degrees. Woody flavors, overripe fruit, more evolved tones of walnuts, tannins are felt on the palate and give a certain liveliness. The sip is discreet, has a certain depth, moves well with spicy returns of ginger, never lets go of a smug sweetness, but don’t expect miracles. In any case, the balance between sweetness, spice and dynamism of the sip is ok. Pleasant finish where tannic, sweet, spicy tones of medicinal herbs are concentrated with a very dry finish.
Surely if you are used to the classic Glenmorangie this one will surprise you, it is much less sweet and tame, indeed it appears quite dry, more pushed from a floral and herbaceous point of view. Don’t expect the explosive fruit and sly chocolate of Glenmorangie The Quinta Ruban 14 or even the creamy panna cotta of La Santa 12.
Glenmorangie The Duthac price
It is quite easy to find around now, even if in the early days it was reserved for the duty-free market. In any case, the 1-liter bottle costs 90 euros. It is an excellent bottle to drink even in summer with a drop of soda or water to bring out the most delicate aromas.
