Discover the Rustic Finesse of Majulina Calafata 2019: A Lean and Flavorful Sangiovese from Tuscany’s Lucchesi Hills
Majulina Calafata 2019 is a nice and lean red wine from Tuscany.
It has just the right amount of saltiness and shows off the finesse of Sangiovese in a very rustic and direct way.
It’s not a depth bomb, and it doesn’t even want to go too deep; it only offers great pleasantness, agility of sip, and all the classic characteristics of this great vine.
How it is produced
The vineyards are located on the hills of Maulina and Morianese and are managed according to the dictates of biodynamics. The blend is dominated by Sangiovese, but there is a small contribution of other Tuscan grapes such as Colorino, Canaiolo, and Ciliegiolo.
The grapes are harvested, destemmed, and then pounded with steel and wooden feet. The must ferments without the addition of yeasts and then rests in steel. The wine is neither filtered nor clarified; it clarifies naturally.
Organoleptic characteristics
Ruby colour. The bouquet of this wine is winy and subtle; it smells of wood and black cherries, of black tea, and of undergrowth. The ancestral vegetable appeal of Sangiovese is perceived, but there are no forcings or coarse traits, but only fruit, earth, rock, and wind.
On the palate, it is broad and juicy but defined by an excellent softness, which is masterfully balanced by very docile tannins. The wine is eloquent, direct, and sanguine, but always very delicate in its gait. The structure is good, even if the dynamism and savory drive prevail. Fruit is all juice and never pumped.
Loose soils and good excursion ensure lightness and juice without an exaggerated concentration. The beauty of this wine is its diaphanous elegance; it is not powerful and rocky, but always flowing, sinuous, herbaceous, and elegant.
Price
18–19 euros: a great price for a thin and well-shaped red wine.
