Château Bonnet Réserve 2020: A Cabernet-Driven Bordeaux with Muscle, Spice and Serious Value
Château Bonnet Réserve 2020 is a robust, dark-fruited Bordeaux with generous tannins, an attractive spicy streak and enough substance to stand up to considerably more expensive bottles. Cabernet Sauvignon takes the lead, bringing blackcurrant, cedar and a firm structure, while Merlot adds ripe plum and a softer, velvety texture.
The 2020 vintage was warm and dry, and you can see its influence in the concentration of the fruit. Yet this is no overripe, heavy-handed Bordeaux. The tannins are substantial, the oak is confidently handled, and a savoury finish keeps the richness under control. At €16, it’s a compelling example of what a traditional Bordeaux blend can deliver without an aristocratic price tag.

The Estate and the 2020 Vintage
Château Bonnet lies in Grézillac, in the Entre-deux-Mers region, between Bordeaux’s two great rivers, the Garonne and the Dordogne. The property has a long history, but its modern identity is inseparable from André Lurton, who inherited the estate in 1956 and developed it into one of the family’s most important vineyards.
The château produces both white and red wines, with the Réserve representing a more ambitious interpretation of its traditional Bordeaux blend.
The vineyard soils contain varying proportions of clay, limestone and silica. Clay helps retain moisture during dry periods, while the better-drained parcels encourage controlled vine growth. These characteristics were particularly important in 2020, when Bordeaux experienced abundant spring rainfall followed by an exceptionally dry summer.
Warm weather accelerated ripening, but cooler nights towards the end of August helped preserve acidity. Harvesting at Château Bonnet began on September 15 and continued until October 1.
The blend is unusual for this part of Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 58%, with Merlot making up the remaining 42%. Cabernet provides the firm tannic backbone and blackcurrant character, while Merlot contributes flesh and texture.
It’s a combination that gives the Réserve a more assertive personality than the estate’s regular red.
How It’s Made
The grapes are fermented in stainless-steel tanks equipped with a system designed to break up the cap of skins and distribute it through the fermenting must.
This improves contact between juice and skins, allowing controlled extraction of colour, tannins and aromatic compounds.
After fermentation, the wine spends twelve months in oak barrels, 20% of which are new. The relatively modest proportion of new wood is important: it adds spice and structure without burying the fruit beneath vanilla and toast.
The finished wine has the density expected from a warm Bordeaux vintage, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon’s tannins and the softer mid-palate of Merlot.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep garnet red, almost opaque at the centre, with brilliant ruby reflections.
Bouquet: Blackcurrant and blackberry dominate the opening, followed by ripe plum, cedar and a delicate touch of vanilla. Sweet spices emerge with aeration, alongside dark chocolate and a faint tobacco note. The nose is concentrated and confident, with oak adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Palate: Broad, fleshy and firmly structured. Blackcurrant and dark cherry lead the way, followed by liquorice, pepper and a measured dose of oak spice. The tannins are dense but polished, giving the wine a muscular texture without excessive roughness. Merlot adds a welcome softness, while the acidity keeps the ripe fruit from becoming tiring. There’s genuine weight here, but also discipline.
Finish: Long, dry and persistent, with lingering black fruit, cedar and a slightly bitter chocolate note. The tannins retain a firm grip, leaving a satisfying, savoury impression.
Our Verdict
Château Bonnet Réserve 2020 is an impressive Bordeaux for the money. Cabernet Sauvignon gives it authority, Merlot supplies richness, and twelve months in oak bring the structure together without excessive sweetness or toast.
Compared with the regular Château Bonnet Rouge, the Réserve is darker, more tannic and considerably more ambitious. It has the substance to develop further in bottle and enough character to make its €16 price look particularly attractive.
