2019 Vosne Romanee Domaine René Cacheux: the review of an excellent Burgundy Pinot Noir
The 2019 Vosne Romanee Domaine René Cacheux is a pleasant, elegant, not too structured and deep Pinot Noir. It will not amaze you with incredible special effects but its measured grandeur. It is a wine with a simple stylistic system, a classic Pinot Noir from the village of Vosne Romanee, but don’t think so much about a grand cru with a thousand layers or a cornucopia of flavors as a wine that is easy to read. Austere and not yet ready.
The problem with this Burgundy is straightforward: in 8 years, it will be great. For now, it’s just the surface of a dark pond under which you don’t see much. Of course, the fabric, the dense tannins, the ethereal fruit, and the finesse are already there, but they are all characteristics that are only sketchy and not yet developed. In a nutshell, the balance is still a long way off. Even the wood is still intrusive and marks too much with a caricatured spiciness.
How is it produced?
On a human scale, the Domaine René Cacheux is an artisanal winery, a small company gradually moving towards increasingly aware and environmentally friendly cultivation. For now, they are not certified organic, but they practice integrated pest management. They are approaching, and in the meantime, they have banned chemical pesticides and herbicides, and obviously, every operation is done by hand. After the harvest, the grapes are de-stemmed, the must ferments thanks to indigenous yeasts, and then refines in new and used barriques for 18 months.
Organoleptic characteristics
The bouquet is sharp and dark, with clear berries, ginger, rhubarb, sweet spices, and endless wood. Blueberries in gelee, blue flowers, and earthy returns. All well done, punctuated with elegance and cleanliness. Only the wood is annoying and still too dominant.
It is austere, ethereal fruit on the palate, flecked with mint. It doesn’t focus much on power but finesse. Dynamic sip, still cast by massive acidity and tannins that do not let go—finale of watermelon, orange, and a smoky tone that fades into the fruit.
Overall it is a correct wine endowed with personality, even if still too young and decomposed, with the complex parts that dominate. However, the future is bright. In 8 years, it will be ready.
