2016 Schiava Grigia Sonntaler Kurtatsch Review And Tasting Notes
The 2016 Schiava Grigia Sonntalermade made by Kurtatsch winery is a dry, mineral, elegant, and sharp wine. It is not the usual Schiava, all fruit, and flowers. This has a decisive mineral charm that elevates it, making it one of the most representative of the category.
The tannins are always delicate and well defined, so do not worry: it is not a strong wine. It’s just that it has more personality than usual.
How is it produced?
Everything comes from the vineyards, real ents of South Tyrol, as they are aged from 60 to 100 years. Thermal excursion, an excellent slope for drainage, altitude of 400 meters, dolomitic and loamy soils. After the harvest, it macerates and ferments in steel, undergoes malolactic fermentation, and then ages in large barrels.
Organoleptic characteristics
Take the classic Schiava, add a pinch of depth, let the fruit ripen more without turning it into jam, add more roundness and a good dose of rockiness, and have a brand new Schiava.
The bouquet is played on wild strawberries, cherries, slightly hinted sweet spices, watermelon, and tomato. The pace is agile and shows cleanliness and good finesse, with credible changes of pace. Earthy finish with licorice and good black cherry.
On the palate, it is sharp but not rude. The aging in wood has softened the shy character of the Schiava, increasing its personality. Overall it is always a light and subtle wine, the tannins are very docile, and the acidic orange flavors are well blended in the lean structure.
It is not a colossal wine, but it is nice to taste a little more pulp in a bottle of Schiava. Well done.
