Marche is an explosion of color, living Fauvism. The silvery wiggle of fishes. The turquoise sea, grazing the sunflower fields. An ancient mill surrounded by olive trees. Take Urbino, a city with a lofty, metaphysical air. Take the quintessential geometry of its perfectly preserved buildings, perched upon a cold, distant rock. This distance is but an impression: Urbino is warm, full as it is of university students and antique stores. The Palazzo Ducale houses an exceptional picture gallery, whose highlight is the work of the Masters of the Renaissance—Piero della Francesca above all.

Make a stop to observe the landscape from atop the Shrine of Loreto, which encloses the house of the Virgin Mary, moved here from Nazareth, according to tradition, through the angelic ministry. Or the underground landscape of the Frasassi caves, veritable geologic gardens. You’ll feel stupefied by such beauty, as you will by the wines of this region.
