The Ugly cocktail is born from the union of three unique ingredients that are part of a fascinating autumn recipe: oranges, pepper and fennel. Who doesn’t love this tasty autumn salad so fresh, aromatic and full of flavor?
Many love it for sure, but the admirers will increase if we transfer this triad of flavors into a cocktail based on mezcal. Think about it: the fruit and the mysterious smoky suggestions of mezcal blend into an incredible symphony where the sweet freshness of the orange juice dominates, driven by the ephebic fennel flavor. The pepper is used to give brushstrokes of heat, expands the aromaticity of the mezcal without taking over. To give a herbaceous touch, add a couple of drops of Angostura and the cocktail is ready.
The Ugly cocktail has a very low alcohol content and flows on the palate very light, without weighing it down, so you can also drink it as a light aperitif before dinner.
Ingredients and doses to make the Ugly cocktail
- 4 cl of mezcal
- 0.5 cl of triple sec, optional but the taste of burnt orange is there
- 1 piece of fennel
- 1/2 orange
- a pinch of pepper
- 2 drops of Angostura
- 1 cl of sugar syrup
How to make the Ugly cocktail
Squeeze the orange and strain the juice.
If you want to make fennel juice, use the extractor or crush it in the shaker with the pestle, then strain and crush the pulp in the sieve to recover all the possible juice.
Put everything in a shaker with ice, stir for a few seconds and then pour into a full glass of crushed ice and decorate with a slice of dried orange and a sprig of mint.
