Le Gavroche’s Final Bow: London’s Culinary Titan Set to Close
Michel Roux Jr. has declared the imminent closure of the renowned Mayfair dining spot, Le Gavroche, in January, after 54 illustrious years.

This legendary French-inspired London venue was the brainchild of Roux’s father, the late Albert Roux, and uncle, the late Michel Roux Sr., launched in 1969. After securing its initial Michelin star in 1977, the eatery made UK history by earning three Michelin stars in 1982, subsequent to its relocation to the spacious Upper Brook Street.
Assuming the helm in 1991, Michel Roux Jr. referred to his leadership as a profound honor. Despite a reduction to two Michelin stars due to a shift in culinary approach, Le Gavroche maintained its revered status in London under his guidance.
Chef-patron Roux remarked, “This revelation might be startling for many. However, the decision wasn’t impulsive. Le Gavroche is deeply cherished by many, including our dedicated team and esteemed patrons.”
Roux elaborated, “I always envisioned Le Gavroche ending on a triumphant note. While our bookings remain consistent, I’ve yearned for personal time and to pursue other ventures. This lease conclusion presented the perfect juncture to reassess.”
He praised Le Gavroche for revolutionizing the UK dining scene, stating its unmatched legacy and continued popularity amidst global change. He also acknowledged the culinary maestros who graced its kitchens, naming Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay, Pierre Koffmann, and Monica Galetti.
Reassuring fans, Roux disclosed that the ‘Le Gavroche’ brand would feature in pop-up events. He will persist with his elite catering company, Chez Roux, and anticipates a slew of celebratory events preceding the restaurant’s closure.
Though many speculated Emily Roux would continue the family tradition, she helms her own establishment, Caractère, alongside her chef spouse, Diego Ferrari.
Concluding with gratitude, Roux expressed, “We owe our monumental success to our devoted clientele. Your unwavering support has been our cornerstone, and I extend heartfelt thanks to all who’ve dined with us.”
