Hong Kong Bestows Trademark Status on Scotch Whisky: A Win for Authenticity
Hong Kong has officially granted Scotch whisky trademark status, as confirmed by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA).
The successful registration of “Scotch whisky” as a Certification Trademark in Hong Kong ensures that only products adhering to stringent production and labeling standards, and crafted in Scotland, can bear the name “Scotch whisky.”
British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macao, Brian Davidson, stated, “This significant step reinforces Scotch whisky as an emblem of Scotland’s distinguished heritage and skill. We appreciate the unwavering support from Hong Kong consumers. They can now further trust the authenticity of Scotland’s cherished drink.”
Scotch whisky already possesses protection as a Geographical Indication (GI) and trademark in Mainland China and has GI status in Macao.
With this move, Hong Kong joins over 100 international territories that officially acknowledge Scotch whisky for its Scottish origins, traditional crafting methods, and its merit for distinct protection.
Specific regulations dictate that Scotch must solely consist of water, cereals, and yeast, and undergo maturation in oak casks in Scotland for a minimum of three years.
In 2022, Scotch exports to Hong Kong exceeded £31 million, underscoring the region’s growing significance in the Scotch market.
Lindesay Low, the Scotch Whisky Association’s deputy legal director, remarked, “Enhancing Scotch whisky’s protection in emerging markets remains a focal point for the SWA Legal Team. With Hong Kong’s endorsement of the Scotch whisky certification trademark, consumers are assured they’re purchasing an authentic, premium product.”
