Brass Lion Distillery Pioneers Singapore’s First Single Malt: A Bold Pour
Brass Lion Distillery in Singapore has shattered local conventions by unveiling its inaugural single malt whisky.
Launching on September 9, this single cask release is highly exclusive, with a mere 427 bottles up for grabs. Remarkably, 70 of these have been siphoned off at cask strength.
To achieve this milestone, Brass Lion’s squad, led by founder Jamie Koh, partnered with General Brewing Co. They engineered a custom wash that could withstand Singapore’s sweltering, humid conditions.
They chose Maris Otter malt for the mash, fermented it at ambient temperatures using heat-resistant top-fermenting ale yeasts. The resulting wash underwent double distillation and then matured in a bourbon barrel for over three years, benefitting from the climate’s accelerated aging effect.
Brass Lion pays tribute to its Singaporean roots through the whisky’s packaging, incorporating topographic lines of the surrounding Alexandra Terrace as a design motif.
Jamie Koh expressed, “Innovation is our driving force. Whether it’s flavor or technique, we’re all about redefining what local distilleries can achieve. Creating this whisky wasn’t just an option—it was a dare. And being the first is always a thrill.”
Prospective customers, who’ve opted for early access, will receive purchase links when the bottles become available. Additionally, attendees of the “Making History: A Brass Lion Whisky Experience” at the distillery can potentially secure a bottle. Starting September 23 through mid-October, limited servings of this single malt will be offered in the distillery’s tasting room, depending on availability.
