Indian Single Malts Triumph: Surpassing Global Giants in the Whisky World
Recent data reveals a significant shift in India’s whisky market: Indian single malt whiskies have started outselling their international counterparts on their own turf.
Domestic Dominance in Numbers
Statistics from the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) indicate a remarkable trend. In 2023, whiskies produced within India comprised approximately 53% of the country’s single malt sales, marking a nearly 25% increase from the previous year. This surge starkly contrasts the modest 11% growth observed in imported whisky brands.
Top Performers in the Indian Market
Reporting by the Times of India underscores this shift. Of the 675,000 cases of single malt sold in India in 2023, a substantial 345,000 were of Indian origin. Leading the charge were brands like Amrut, Paul John, Rampur, Indri, and Gianchand – the top five best-selling Indian single malts.
A Tectonic Shift in Preferences
The Indian whisky landscape, historically dominated by iconic Scottish brands such as The Glenlivet, Macallan, Lagavulin, and Talisker, is witnessing a transformative phase. Notably, major Scotch whisky companies are now recognizing the potential of Indian-made malts. Diageo introduced its Godawan single malt from the Alwar distillery in Rajasthan in 2022, and Pernod Ricard followed suit with Longitude 77, launched in December 2023 after an exclusive two-month stint in travel retail.
A Testament to Quality
Thrivikram Nikam, Joint Managing Director of Amrut Distilleries, told the Times of India, “It’s not every day that such a feat is achieved. Indian whisky makers have evolved immensely, now matching global standards in quality and refinement.”
