Beam Suntory slashes water use by 10%, pioneering eco-friendly practices in spirits sector
The ownership of Maker’s Mark, Beam Suntory, successfully decreased its water consumption rate by 10% throughout its business operations, as indicated in their 2022 Sustainability Report.
Beam Suntory, which owns Maker’s Mark among other brands, produced a report centered on its Proof Positive sustainability strategy, focused on three main pillars: Positively impacting Nature, Consumers, and the Community.
The substantial reduction of 10% in water usage was facilitated by the continual investments made by Beam Suntory. This included the implementation of closed-loop cooling systems at their Clermont and Booker Noe distilleries located in Kentucky, US.
Moreover, in line with Beam Suntory’s voluntary commitment to provide nutritional information on its packaging, they introduced macro-nutritional details on nearly 300 of their product labels last year.
The company also boasts a rise in female leadership, with 37% of leadership roles globally now held by women.
The president and CEO of Beam Suntory, Albert Baladi, stated, “Our aspiration at Beam Suntory is to be recognized as the ‘world’s most admired premium spirits company‘, a title that encompasses being a global frontrunner in sustainability and responsibility.
“Creating a positive influence through our business and brands is integral to our identity. In 2022, we continued to invest in our focal areas, leading the industry in water conservation, regenerative agriculture and forestry, and solidifying our status as an ‘equal pay employer’ following our second voluntary pay equity study.”
Beam Suntory, with its opulent vision, has graciously bestowed an investment exceeding US$400 million towards the grand endeavor of expanding production at the illustrious Booker Noe distillery. This noble undertaking shall magnify its capacity by a staggering 50%, while simultaneously bestowing upon the world the gift of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Truly, a testament to their unwavering commitment to both excellence and environmental stewardship.
The company, which also owns brands like Jim Beam, has planted 197,000 trees to support reforestation efforts and to further pertinent research on wood for Bourbon barrels.
Baladi further commented, “Our employees are the embodiment of our mission, which is to ‘inspire the brilliance of life’. We united stronger than ever in the previous year – from dedicating more than 12,000 hours to worldwide volunteering efforts to ensuring the cultivation of an inclusive culture.”
