Bandol Classic Tempier 2017 Review And Tasting Notes
The Bandol Classic Tempier 2017 stands as the paramount cuvée crafted by the esteemed Tempier estate, embodying the delicate balance between the inherent power of Bandol wines and the elegance and finesse associated with Tempier’s signature style.
The importance of the Terroir
The intricate complexity of this remarkable cuvée can be attributed to the diverse terroirs and array of clay-limestone soils found not only within the estate but also in the surrounding regions of La Cadière, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, and Ollioules, nestled in the picturesque Loire Valley of France.
This rich tapestry of soils includes sandy marls, the greseux limestone of San Antonio, and rudimentary limestone, while the unique orientations with respect to wind and sunlight further contribute to the wine’s character. Traditional tilling methods are employed, utilizing both physical and mechanized labor without resorting to pesticides. Instead, carefully measured treatments are applied to the grapes as an alternative to synthetic chemicals.
How is made?
To fully harness the potential of the vines and optimize their output, the production is limited to 35-38 hl/ha. Harvesting is performed manually, with grapes handpicked into individual 30-kilogram boxes. Bunches are meticulously selected both in the vineyard and storage area to ensure the highest quality.
Maceration spans between 15 days and 3 weeks, with temperatures maintained in stainless steel or concrete tanks during the conventional red wine production process. This process encompasses the crushing and destemming of the grapes as well as the fermentation of alcohol using native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation occurs throughout the aging period, which transpires in oak barrels ranging in size from 25 to 75 hl and lasting between 18 and 20 months.
The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve its natural essence.
The Bandol Classic Tempier 2017 features a harmonious blend of Mourvèdre (70-75%), Grenache (14-16%), Cinsault (8-9%), and Carignan (2-3%) grape varieties.
