Ageless Elegance: Savoring the 2009 Mondaccione Coppo Freisa Langhe Vigne Vecchie
The Mondaccione Coppo 2009 Freisa Langhe Vigne Vecchie is an ephebic, subtle red wine with balsamic scents and an intriguing mineral charm, but don’t expect powerful tannins or a vigorous structure.
It’s a delicately played Freisa who hops around with a light foot and cheeky grace.
It lets itself go through a good, spicy change in which the fruit ripens and becomes a rich potpourri that smells like an old pharmacy full of medicines and healing herbs.
The wood still feels heavy, but it’s not particularly annoying.
After all, the Coppo cellar is well-known for its small-wood aging.
How it is produced
Vineyards in the hills of Santo Stefano Belbo, in the heart of Monferrato. Long maceration of 20 days, fermentation in wooden vats, and aging in both large and small wood.
Organoleptic characteristics
Pale ruby color. Crazy nose: it is a symphony of raspberry jam and mint, coffee, and sumptuous, nervous, and cheeky green tones. It does not hide, but despite being mature, it does not turn to extreme baking and maintains cleanliness, rigor, and impeccable austerity despite its richness.
Finish of mixed black tea, rosemary, and olives. You will come back to smell it over and over again; it is of a moving beauty, full of vivacity, and an almost unique example of courage.
On the palate, we find this nervous step; the green and mentholated trait is superb and gives character to the wine, making it sharp and penetrating, although it can boast an accommodating softness.
A large but diaphanous structure, it ranges but does not have a heavy hand. It is not a tame and immediate wine, but one that dares and is proud of its rough aromatic darkness.
Price
42-44 euros: an acceptable price for an eclectic wine, territorial like few others, and full of character.
Pairings
Pair this epiphanic wine with meat and truffles, vegetables and bagna cauda, stews and game, aged cheeses, tacos, black truffle risotto, passatelli with Parmigiano fondue and truffle, bucatini all’amatriciana, roast beef, hamburger.
