Casa Benna winery
Casa Benna is a lovely, family run cellar, with deep roots in the tradition of the Colli Piacentini. It was founded in 1916 and today we got to the third generation with the tiller in the firm hands of Andrea Molinari. The management is natural friendly, very attentive and the 10 hectares of vines are cultivated with the classic grapes we can find in the Colli Piacentini: Bonarda, Croatina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ortrugo, and last but not the least: Sauvignon Blanc.
Philosophy of Casa Benna’s winery
Their goal is simple: to produce good, “real” wines that can speak and tell about the terroir of Piacenza, specifically of the Tidone valley and clearly. Diversity is a great value in the vineyards: exposures and soil change radically from one hill to another, so it was decided to vinify separately every “cru” and then assemble them or keep them “pure”. Each vineyard tells a different story and a good winemaker must know how to tell this story.
The secret to produce good wines? This is not a secret tells us Andrea: live by and with the vineyards: low yields, soft pruning, bunch thinning and rigorous regime in chemical management. Andrea is very respectful of nature and adopted different solutions to maintain a low impact on the environment of the cellar: the photovoltaic system that feeds the entire estate, heating from burned prunings, water recycling are just a few of the details.
Style of the wines
At Casa Benna winery you will find wines of great depth, in which there is no shortage of rich fragrances and “typicality”. The oak aging is always soft and it helps during the process, but it does not mark the wines with intrusive aromas. Drinking the wines of Casa Benna is like listening to a symphony of the earth, a fresco in which are dotted the hills of Val Tidone.
Why you should visit Casa Benna winery?
The winery and vineyards are worth a visit in itself, but also the warmth with which you will be welcomed is amazing. In addition you will taste one of the best Italian Gutturnio and could visit one of the most stunning medieval city in Italy.
DOC Colli Piacentini Gutturnio Classico Riserva
Ruby robe. The nose offers hot, faceted, yet very typical aromas: a riot of blackberries, juniper, black cherries and violets that bloom in a rich undergrowth. Sweet spices and ethereal background. In the mouth it is elegant, compact, round with and lively acidity. Long finish where resurface cherry liqueur. Aging potential of 5-6 years. Suggested food pairings: beef curry, pappardelle with hare sauce, peking duck.
DOC Colli Piacentini Gutturnio Classico Superiore
We have an harmonious bouquet that is articulated around a mature red fruit, all played on the warm tones of blueberry, pepper, eucalyptus, plums with a touch of mint. The palate is broad, soft, pushed by enveloping tannins. Balance and stunning drinkability are the keys of this wine. Suggested food pairings: lasagna with ragù, rack of lamb with thyme, ribs.
DOC Colli Piacentini Gutturnio
Ruby red with soft foam. The nose is intense and precise, focused on cherries, raspberries, red flowers and rhubarb. Fresh and tickling on the palate, which flows wonderfully driven by balanced tannins and crispy bubbles. A super enjoyable Gutturnio perfect for salami, ricotta ravioli with porcini, souvlaki, eggplant parmigiana.
DOC Colli Piacentini Bonarda
A monovarietal Croatina with a beautiful ruby color. Thyme, pepper, plum and earthy minerality are intertwined to form a very elegant olfactory profile. The mouth has generous structure, but flows easily and displays a nice mineral layering. A very drinkable Bonarda to match with stuffed pork, aged cheeses.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Produced only in the best vintages, and the 2010 has power and style to spare. The spectrum ranges from blueberries in alcohol, plum, sweet spices and delicious earthy notes, with balsamic hints and coffee whirls to close. In the mouth it’s fleshy, bold and has a crazy intensity that grows vertically, lifted by perfectly balanced tannins. Suggested food pairings: black truffle risotto, passatelli with Parmigiano fondue and truffle, bucatini all’amatriciana, roast beef, hamburger. There are only 800 bottles, so, hurry up!
“27 Red”, Muffato Croatina
A very, very particular wine: the grape is always Croatina, but this time we have a sweet wine attacked by noble rot, a Sauternes wine style, but red. It has a complex bouquet that consists of black cherries, cherry liqueur, violets and withered iris, chocolate and mint returns to confirm a concentration of rare elegance. In the mouth all this richness is supported by an acidity that makes the wine vivid, vibrant and deep, with good balance between sweetness and freshness. Suggested food pairing: cheesecake with blueberries, cherry tart, baklava.
MONTEROSSO VAL D’ARDA
Bright straw yellow color with golden highlights. Floral, fragrant nose with notes of apple and pear to refine an expressive profile. Velvety on the palate, with bright freshness. A classic white of the Val d’Arda to combine with grilled prawns, erbazzone, baked turbot with potatoes.
ORTRUGO
Color: bright, light straw. The nose is subtle and intense and overlooks hawthorn, peach flowers, marjoram and memories of flint. Slender body, beautifully crafted, rich of flavor. Balance and elegance for a Ortrugo to pair with trout with almonds, Thai rolls, seafood paccheri.
SAUVIGNON “GARATTA”
Hawthorn, peach, beautiful shades of many herbs and flowers for this classic Sauvignon, which in the clay soils of Casa Benna finds an excellent terroir. It is a wine with a nifty charm, sharp and full of herbs, very drinkable, salty but with a classic almond coated finis. A classic every day bottle to keep in your cellar for every dishes with seafood and fish. Suggested food pairings: pasta with pesto, risotto with asparagus and Gorgonzola, pasta cacio e pepe.
