Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Wine Guide
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is one of the most underrated autochthonous vines of Friuli Venezia Giulia, a wine that for centuries has been mortified with rustic winemaking, but that in reality, if made with care and aged without hurry in wood, it becomes a great wine red.
The problem with Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is that it is a very angular wine, tannic like an unripe and acid nut. It’s rude, stormy, rebellious and therefore it takes utmost care and a long time to transform all its extract into finesse.
Yeah, you just need time and patience, because over the years Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso softens: the aromas evolve, the fruit ripens, the cutting freshness softens and the tannins become more docile.
And of course, to produce in this way the costs increase, the wine has to age for years in the cellar and then in the bottle and it’s a completely different story. But it would be a shame not to believe in this splendid wine, it is like the story of the ugly duckling. As a newborn it’s shy and ugly, but then one day it will turn into a swan, hovers his wings and takes flight.
The history of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso has ancient origins if we accept the hypothesis that it is the famous Roman red wine called Picinum, of which Pliny the Elder tells us to be present in what is now Friuli Venezia Giulia.
But as usual, we make assumptions about the testimony of the mythical Pliny who lived 2 millennia ago and in reality, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso has given rise to a family of vines, other varieties, and mutations.
Characteristics from Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso
We are talking about wines of a certain thickness, barrel-aged and with a few years on their shoulders. Let’s leave the young and easy-going wines aside: they are fresh and aromatic, but nothing more. The bouquet is very broad, warm, ripe, spicy, with notes of dried flowers, plums, and blackberries. The fruit is enveloping, velvety, the earthy aromas are not lacking and there are notes of cinchona and other balsamic echoes. In any case, it is very elegant, never pungent and always sumptuous.
What does Refosco taste like?
On the palate Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is structured, fresh, defined by vigorous tannins, which become fine over the years. The taste is intense, mottled of licorice, eucalyptus, and pepper.
It is a complex wine and not so easy to find, just look for bottles with a minimum of 2 years of barrel aging to better enjoy this excellent Friulian red wine. But above all trust him, few know him, but as usual, we have a big treasure hidden in what is a lovely garden.
Drink Refosco and be happy!
