Single Malt Laphroaig Select review and testing notes
The Single Malt Select made by the Laphroaig distillery is a good Scotch whiskey, without highs, with shady peat scents, but which also allows a more subtle, floral and citrusy elegance to emerge.
By now you will know very well the Laphroaig distillery, located on the island of Islay, in Scotland, home of great peaty whiskeys. Sea, coal and herbs are the hallmarks of these whiskeys. They are not distilled for those who love soft and velvety whiskeys, but for those who want strong emotions in the glass.
But probably at Laphroaig, they thought of making a product that was even more affordable and less extreme, and then this Single Malt Select was born, born from the union of the other Laphroaig whiskeys. The result is pleasant, softer, less intense, but always with a nice peaty character.
Single Malt Laphroaig Select bouquet
Classic nose focused on good spiciness, warm fruit, many herbs, returns of flowers, touches of dried fruit, iodized marine tones to add aromatic embroideries and then the finish: really delicious with sage and citrus.
It is a beautiful bouquet, very balanced, never too aggressive, never too peaty. Let’s say that peat is the fulcrum, but it manages to expand with a certain elegance.
The flavor of Single Malt Laphroaig Select
The mouth is warm, peppery, mentholated, characterized by a sapid rhythm of moderate thickness. The tannic and spicy flavors are there, but they are not intrusive, they add variety, but we feel that the refinement has been designed to attract palates that are approaching the first peaty whiskeys.
The balance is good, the persistence is excellent, with traces of peat, pepper and sea that remain in the mouth for about ten minutes.
In conclusion, it is a discreet whiskey, well made, but which is recommended for those who are not yet accustomed to the strong flavors of Islay whiskeys. If you are already fond of peaty whiskeys, it will seem a bit bland, not bad, but it does not have tiger eyes.
