Materia FN 2021: Nebbiolo from Monferrato with Violet, Iron and a Quietly Radical Edge
Materia’s FN 2021 is a very small-production Nebbiolo from San Giorgio Monferrato, and almost every technical choice points toward transparency rather than polish. The fruit comes from a one-hectare parcel called Fornace, facing north-east on calcareous-marly soils rich in clay and silt, with vines around 25 years old.
The wine is fully destemmed, fermented spontaneously in open wooden vats and matured for around a year in third-use barriques, with no fining or filtration and only minimal sulphur. That matters because the resulting style is neither glossy nor excessively extracted: it is aromatic, firm and finely savoury, with Nebbiolo’s floral side intact but enough depth to justify the broader Monferrato Rosso denomination.

Appearance
Medium ruby with a clear garnet edge, transparent rather than dense. The colour immediately fits the wine’s approach: extraction is present, but concentration is not forced.
Nose
The nose opens on sour cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry, followed by violet, dried rose and a cool balsamic note. With air, the fruit becomes less central and more savoury detail emerges: liquorice, white pepper, iron and a faint earthy character.
There is also a slightly ferrous, mineral impression that fits the wine particularly well. The oak is almost invisible aromatically, which is exactly what third-use barrels should achieve in a wine where the objective is vineyard expression rather than barrel signature.
Palate
The palate is medium-bodied and tightly structured, with red cherry and cranberry carried by vivid acidity and fine, persistent tannin. The texture is more serious than the pale colour suggests, but it never becomes heavy or extracted.
Violet and sour cherry dominate early, followed by liquorice, herbs and a distinctly savoury mineral tone through the middle. The 13.5% alcohol keeps everything agile, while the tannins are firm enough to give the wine real ageing potential without making the 2021 difficult to drink now.
What stands out most is the clarity of the fruit. Minimal-intervention wines can sometimes trade definition for rusticity, but FN remains clean and articulate, with enough tension to feel deliberate rather than simply “natural”.
Finish
Long, dry and finely tannic, with sour cherry, violet, liquorice and an iron-like mineral note. The finish tightens rather than broadens, leaving freshness and spice behind the fruit.
Ready to Drink?
Yes, but the 2021 is still young.
The tannins have begun to settle, yet the wine remains more primary than tertiary. A short period in bottle should bring greater integration between the floral, balsamic and earthy components.
It should drink very well from now through roughly 2032, with the best bottles potentially lasting longer.
Serving and Decanting
Serve at 16–17°C.
Give it around 30–45 minutes of air if opening now. The wine benefits from oxygen, but there is no need for aggressive decanting.
A large Burgundy-style glass works better than a narrow Bordeaux glass because it allows the violet, spice and balsamic aromas to expand.
Food Pairings

FN suits dishes with savoury depth but moderate weight. Try agnolotti del plin with roast jus, roast guinea fowl with porcini, or tajarin with butter, sage and veal reduction.
For cheese, choose Castelmagno, Bra Duro and Raschera stagionata. Their salt and nutty character complement the tannin without masking the wine’s floral and mineral detail.
Price and Value
The current release is €89 direct from the estate, reflecting both the tiny production and the highly manual approach.
That is a serious price for Monferrato Rosso, but the comparison should not be with generic regional reds. FN comes from a single one-hectare parcel, yields only around 900 bottles and is treated with the same level of attention usually reserved for far more famous Nebbiolo appellations.
The value therefore lies in rarity and precision rather than appellation prestige. At this level, the wine makes most sense for drinkers interested in small-parcel Nebbiolo rather than label hierarchy.
What Defines FN 2021
The key tension is between Nebbiolo’s natural tannin and the wine’s unusually delicate extraction. The north-east exposure and calcareous-marly soil preserve freshness, while clay and silt add enough depth to prevent the wine from feeling thin.
Spontaneous fermentation, neutral wood and minimal intervention keep the aromatic profile open rather than polished. Cherry and violet remain central, but the wine’s real personality comes from the iron, herbs and savoury mineral line underneath.
