Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 Rancia tasting notes and review
Felsinas’s Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 Rancia is a solid and spicy wine that focuses entirely on the structure and intensity of aromas. Quite frankly, this 2013 vintage is still a bit untidy and woody, very tannic, but with nice depth.
It is a demanding wine, certainly carnivorous, to serve with succulent dishes to smooth out its tannic charge and place it on the right level, but it must also be said with all this mass, this extract needs a few more years to round off and find the right balance. And it’s not a defect, if it were ready now it would be a problem, it would lack tannic ambition, but this Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 Rancia has plenty of tannins and acidity and does not hide them.
It comes from the best crus of the historic Felsina winery, located in Castelnuovo Berardenga not far from Siena, in the heart of the Chianti Classico.
Fermentation in steel with batonnage until April, when the must is put in barriques for aging, which lasts 20 months, followed by 8 months in the bottle.
It is a pure Sangiovese, but do not expect a thin, nervous and particularly sharp Sangiovese, this is quite muscular, full, sumptuous, a typical Chianti Classico of modern conception. But this does not mean that it should be underestimated.
Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 Rancia bouquet
Sumptuous and spicy nose with ripe fruit that moves with a certain elegance. Floral notes, spices, tobacco, and coffee. It is varied, but a bit heavy, built, not exactly natural as a development. Abundant wood.
What does Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 Rancia taste like?
In the mouth, it is warm, broad, tannic, but without smudging. It prefers power and intensity, however, the underlying freshness gives good rhythm to the wine. As complexity is fascinating, the tannic texture offers charm and certainly longevity that can go up to 10 years. Now as now it is a classic red meat wine, but with a few more years it will find a greater balance and will be able to develop tertiary and ethereal aromas, which are currently a bit hidden by the strong smokiness. Long finish with a range of excellent earthy flavors and orange echoes.
It is not a simple wine to review: if you want a hard and pure Sangiovese this is not the right wine. Indeed the makeup given by the barrel aging is too overwhelming. However it is good wine, stylized and still young, but it is not bad at all.
