Despite being one of the most popular drinks in the world, Between the Sheets is a cocktail of obscure origins, in fact little is known about this blend, which is supposed to have been born in the early 1900s in London.
Another theory has it that it is an invention of the famous bartender Harry MacElhone of Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, who would have mixed it for the first time in 1930 as a variant of the Sidecar, which it looks a lot like: eliminate the rum and increase the dose of cognac and the recipe is the same.
The name suggests a lascivious nature of the cocktail or, also considering the massive, how discreet, alcohol content, it suggests that it can be excellent for reconciling sleep, in short, better than a chamomile caipiroska. Not surprisingly, an imaginative theory has it that the cocktail was the favorite drink of the prostitutes of a renowned pleasure house in Paris, hence the name, a bit like our pasta alla puttanesca …
The cocktail itself is very aromatic, sharp, graceful, a concentration of elegance played on the subtle references of white rum, cognac and triple sec (present in equal parts) that alternate creating a refined texture that teases the palate without weighing it down.
But be very careful, because it’s easy to fall in love with this ephebic cocktail, but a couple of them are enough to trigger uncontrolled euphoria, as it has double the amount of alcohol of a tough cocktail like the Old Fashioned, just to give you an idea.
