The Glenlivet and Innis & Gunn Collaborate on a 9-Year-Old Beer Cask Finish Edition
The Glenlivet has collaborated with the Scottish brewery Innis & Gunn to unveil its debut cask-finished single malt whisky.
Coinciding with International Beer Day on August 4th, The Glenlivet’s 9-Year-Old Beer Cask Finish Edition, a limited edition, has been matured in a cask that once contained Innis & Gunn’s Vanishing Point Imperial Stout. These casks were originally owned by The Glenlivet and were lent to Innis & Gunn for the aging of its exclusive Vanishing Point 06.
This marks not only the Speyside distillery’s initial venture into beer cask finishing but is also a first for its parent company, Chivas Brothers. According to The Glenlivet’s tasting notes, the whisky offers flavors of dark cherry tart, golden syrup, tropical fruit, and nutmeg, subtly enhanced by the hops.
As part of The Glenlivet’s Distillery Reserve Collection, this whisky emphasizes the distillery’s commitment to innovation and experimentation.
Kevin Balmforth, a cask expert at Chivas Brothers, remarked, “The Glenlivet is always eager to innovate, and partnering with Innis & Gunn’s exceptional casks provided just that opportunity, signifying our initial adventure in finishing whisky in a beer cask.”
Dougal Gunn Sharp, founder and master brewer at Innis & Gunn, expressed, “Our teamwork with The Glenlivet is both logical and thrilling. We share a strong bond and a mutual passion for creativity and innovation, as well as the fundamental ingredients – grain and casks.”
He continued, “We have been exchanging casks for several years, and our latest Vanishing Point 06 was aged in former The Glenlivet casks. We then returned those casks to The Glenlivet for the final touches on their Distillery Reserve Collection: 9-Year-Old Beer Cask Finish Edition. It’s a remarkable, distinctive expression, enriched with the fruity, malty, and hoppy notes from our beer.”
The Glenlivet Distillery Reserve Collection: 9 Years Old Beer Cask Finish Edition can be purchased at The Glenlivet brand home and through the distillery’s website for £95.
