Tequila Transformation: Mijenta’s Co-Founder Calls for Industry Overhaul
Mike Dolan’s Take on the Tequila Industry
Mijenta co-founder Mike Dolan is calling for a significant restructuring in the Tequila sector, arguing that numerous brands lack substantial purpose or uniqueness. The ex-Bacardi CEO contends that Tequila brands must offer genuine distinctiveness to merit their place in the market. Mijenta Tequila, as he highlights, stands out for its artisanal, additive-free process, a trait Dolan describes as “exceptionally uncommon.”
Discussing the potential reshaping of the Tequila landscape, Dolan relayed insights from a colleague at a New York alcohol and beverages conference. The industry is abuzz with talk of a “shake-out” among Tequila brands, a move Dolan wholeheartedly supports. He criticizes the superficiality of some brands, often backed by celebrities or social media influencers, which fail to gain traction with serious consumers due to their lack of substance.
Dolan emphasizes the need for a foundational rationale behind each brand. Unlike simpler spirits like gin or vodka, which historically have been home-produced, Tequila’s complexity demands expert knowledge and skill. It’s a sophisticated, risk-laden process that requires deep connection with experienced blenders and distillers.
Tequila’s Global Reach: Beyond the US
While the US remains the primary consumer of Tequila, accounting for 80% of its consumption, Dolan is setting his sights globally, identifying London and Dubai as burgeoning markets for the spirit. These cities, known for their high-end bars and restaurants, attract an international clientele that’s continuously evolving its palate.
Mijenta is strategically positioning itself in these elite locales, foreseeing that consumers currently experimenting with lower-tier Tequilas will gradually shift to more premium options. This shift, according to Dolan, will create a robust second-tier market for premium Tequila in places like London, the UK, and Spain, which he identifies as Tequila’s next largest market after the US.
Mijenta’s Market Impact
Mijenta’s own Añejo Gran Reserva experienced a meteoric rise in the US, selling out its entire stock within a month of release. This overwhelming demand for their $200 Tequila caught Mijenta off guard, underscoring the market’s appetite for high-quality spirits. Dolan sees this as an indication that consumers are willing to invest in the finest options available.
