Tejo’s Light Revolution: Introducing the Campo do Tejo Wine Line
Portugal’s Regional Wine Commission of Tejo, (Comissão Vitivinícola Regional do Tejo – CVRT) is introducing a fresh wine category to the region, catering to the global shift towards lighter, more accessible styles.
The Campo do Tejo line-up spotlights a series of easily approachable Tejo white wines, crafted from the region’s renowned white grape variety, Fernão Pires, and featuring a moderate abv of 11.5%.
Initially, this category will be rolled out with contributions from various producers worldwide to the region’s prime markets, which include Brazil, Benelux, China, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, the UK, and the US.
CVRT President, Luis de Castro, stated, “Our region’s true forte and dominant production is white wines, particularly those made from the indigenous Fernão Pires variety. We are thrilled to inaugurate this novel category that will enable us to spotlight a wine style exclusive to our region. Campo do Tejo wines will be characterized by their refreshing, easy-drinking nature and distinct, appealing aromas, shaped by the region’s natural wealth.”
The bottle labels, designed in collaboration with the University of Aveiro, Neil Tully MW, and Amphora Design, showcase the Tejo river.
Wine Intelligence’s Brian Howard disclosed that the Campo do Tejo category is the result of three years of meticulous planning.
It is “carefully made to appeal to a global audience spanning generations who think carefully about their wine choices, drinking events, and the values they choose that show they care about the environment.”
“Campo do Tejo wines are meant to reflect all of these things, with minimal intervention, promoting health-conscious choices with less alcohol and calories, and a clear reflection of the hard work and passion of a small group of dedicated farming families,” he added.
Howard also underscored that the release is strategically timed to capitalize on the lower alcohol duty band in the UK, which is due to take effect this coming August.
