TCWC plans to build Michigan’s biggest distillery
Traverse City Whiskey Co (TCWC) has announced intentions to build the ‘biggest’ distillery in the US state of Michigan next year.
TCWC, which makes a number of high-end whiskeys and a Bourbon with cherry flavoring, has started building a 70,000-square-foot production facility.
The new location will be 201 E 14th Street in downtown Traverse City, Michigan.
The family-owned company stated that due to the rapid growth in demand for its American whiskeys, it has outgrown its present distilling capacity. Because of this, a small amount of its liquid was made by someone outside of the state.
The distillery facility will allow TCWC to produce 24,000 barrels of whiskey per year.
The new facility will have full-service production capabilities, including mashing, fermentation, and distillation.
All of TCWC’s grains (corn, rye, and malted barley) are sourced from the Midwest. The new property will include a grain-growing region.
The complex will comprise a typical rack house, processing and packaging areas, administrative offices, a tourist center and tasting room, as well as indoor and outdoor hospitality areas.
“Our new headquarters will be an all-encompassing campus that will provide a unique immersion in whiskey culture and industry, and will bring a new experience to the flourishing Northern Michigan agritourism industry,” said Chris Fredrickson, co-founder and president of TCWC.
The project is expected to generate roughly 100 new jobs. It will also be able to assist local distilleries in need of capacity.
According to the company, TCWC released Premium Cocktail Cherries in 2018, and it has since become the #1 premium cocktail cherry brand in the US.
A year later, the bourbon company purchased the alcohol-free cocktail mixer company Cocktail Crate and opened its first tasting location in Michigan’s Detroit Metropolitan Area.
