Suntory Celebrates a Year of Culinary Excellence with Premium Wine Showcase
The renowned Suntory Japanese Cuisine & Whisky restaurant recently celebrated its first anniversary, a milestone event graced by prominent figures like Kohei Oyama, General Manager for Viticulture at Tomi no Oka Winery, and Eri Shiinoki, General Manager of the Winery Wine Business Division of Suntory’s Wine Company. The event signified more than just a celebration; it was a gathering of Suntory Holdings China’s leadership, highlighting the restaurant’s rapid ascent in the culinary world.
Tracing its origins to Shinjiro Torii, Suntory’s founder, the company’s wine journey commenced in 1907 with the launch of Akadama Port Wine, today known as Akadama Sweet Wine. A pivotal collaboration in 1936 with Zenbei Kawakami led to establishing a vineyard in Tomi no Oka, Yamanashi Prefecture, marking the birth of the illustrious ‘Tomi’ label.
In 2022, Tomi no Oka Winery broadened its horizons with ‘Suntory From Farm’, introducing four distinct series – Symbol, Winery, Terroir, and Hinshu (Varietal), each reflecting the winery’s diverse approach.
Suntory’s portfolio extends beyond Japan, encompassing Weingut Robert Weil in Germany’s Rheingau region and Chateau Lagrange in Bordeaux, France, along with a presence at Chateau Beychevelle. The company’s influence stretches to China as well, where it owns leading wine importer and distributor ASC Fine Wines, along with F Wines and Monte Bussan in Japan.
An Evening of Premium Wines
The anniversary dinner was not just a commemoration but an exhibition of Tomi no Oka’s exquisite wines, notably the celebrated Tomi 2017. Held at the Suntory Japanese Cuisine & Whisky, which itself launched in December 2022, the event was a confluence of fine dining and exceptional winemaking.
The dinner menu featured an impressive selection of wines, including:
