San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Auction: A Battle to Preserve a Craft Beer Legacy
San Francisco’s storied Anchor Brewing Company, revered for creating the iconic Anchor Steam beer and Liberty Ale, is at a critical juncture. Founded in 1896 and celebrated as America’s original craft brewery, Anchor faced bankruptcy and closure this summer, leading to its assets being auctioned.
In 2017, the brewery was acquired for $US85 million by Japanese brewing heavyweight Sapporo. However, recent developments see the company dismantling, with its brewery, equipment, and intellectual property being sold off separately. The process is overseen by Assignments for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC), a trust managing the sale of Anchor’s remaining assets.
The sale comprises three categories: the brewery’s Potrero Hill location, its brewing equipment, and the cherished intellectual property, including the beer recipes. Hilco Corporate Finance, handling the auction, hasn’t disclosed prices, though speculations suggest the Potrero Hill property is tagged around US$40 million.
Fans and beer preservationists are primarily concerned about Anchor’s intellectual property, eagerly anticipating if the brand will rise again. Rumors hint at two potential buyers expressing interest.
Post-closure, a passionate movement emerged among former employees and fans, including campaigns and a GoFundMe initiative, to resurrect the brand as a cooperative, raising significant funds.
In a recent interview with Vinepair, Patrick Machel, chairperson of Anchor San Francisco Cooperative, estimated the intellectual property’s value at around US$2.5 million. The group focuses on acquiring only the intellectual property, not the physical property, to continue the Anchor legacy.
Local investors, like seed investor Mike Walsh, are also showing interest, aiming to purchase the entire brewery, including its site and equipment. Walsh emphasizes a vision of preserving Anchor’s history and transforming it into a prime destination with additional attractions, maintaining its iconic status.
