Recycling Dilemma: A Hefty Fine for a Good Intention Leaves a Lincolnshire Resident Outraged
A resident of Lincolnshire was hit with a substantial fine for leaving wine bottles beside an already full recycling bin instead of placing them inside.
Neil Robinson was left outraged after being fined £400 by the local council for failing to place waste inside an authorized container.
Robinson, along with his wife, brought three bottles of Prosecco to a recycling point at a Tesco Extra store in Boston, Lincolnshire. Upon arrival, they discovered the glass recycling bin was filled to capacity and overflowing. They decided to leave their empty bottles next to the bins, neatly packed in a plastic bag.
Robinson explained to The Sun, “I believed I was acting responsibly. The bins were overflowing because the council hadn’t emptied them, so I decided to leave my bottles next to the container.”
However, CCTV at the site captured his car registration, and the council tracked Robinson down through the DVLA.
He was then issued a £400 fine with a letter that stated, “Waste must be placed inside an approved bin, recycling receptacle or given to an authorized waste collection authority. Since your waste deposit was unauthorized, you have been fined £400. No discounts for early payment or payment plans are available.”
The letter also contained a warning that failure to pay the penalty by the specified date could lead to prosecution and potentially a more severe penalty and a criminal record.
The council’s spokesperson stated that they maintain a “zero-tolerance policy towards fly-tipping.”
Robinson, who earns his living as a driving instructor, could lose his job if found guilty of the offense.
He expressed his frustration, saying, “The council has essentially labeled me a fly-tipper for taking my recycling to the bottle bank. They’re sending a terrible message to ordinary citizens who merely wish to contribute to the environment. It’s outrageous.”
